In 1068 William the Conqueror granted custody of his new castle at Nottingham and the surrounding districts, including Bolsover, to one of his knights – William Peveril. He built a castle at Bolsover which incorporated an existing manor house. The castle passed through generations with different monarchs making their mark in one way or another. In 1612 William Cavendish wanted to make his own mark and started to build the ‘Little Castle’. In effect this was a lodge positioned with excellent views and built as a retreat and for pleasure. If you get the chance to visit the Little Castle you will find the wall paintings and murals are absolutely fantastic and definitely worth the trip.
